Wind Turbine Fun

As part of our renewable energy workshop in Rotherham, students from the Whitewood’s Academy Trust learned how wind turbines work and explored the importance of sustainable energy in today's world. With gusts sweeping across the site, the turbine spun rapidly, generating electricity right before the students' eyes. This provided a powerful and memorable example of green energy in action.

“Events like this are all about giving young people opportunities to explore STEM in a fun and supportive environment, the wind certainly added a bit of drama, but it turned out to be the perfect teaching tool. We couldn’t have planned it better!”

On Monday 21st July, the Achieve Your Goals Team led another Green Careers session, this time for the incredible students at Armthorpe Shaw Wood Academy. The event began with an engaging presentation by the Achieve Your Goals team, introducing pupils to diverse environmental careers such as scientists, conservationists, foresters, and ecologists. The aim was to inspire curiosity and environmental awareness.

Activity Highlights:

Being a Forester: Pupils measured tree branches and counted growth rings to estimate age, learning about trees' roles in ecosystems while applying mathematical skills.
Being a Hydrologist: In lab gear, pupils tested water pH levels using indicator paper, gaining insight into how scientists monitor water quality.
Being an Ecologist: Pupils examined water samples under lenses to identify tiny organisms, learning how ecologists study ecosystems and biodiversity.
Holding Station: A calming area offered games, card sorts, and colo uring sheets related to green careers, reinforcing learning through play.

Overall, the event combined hands-on activities with educational content to spark interest in environmental careers and promote sustainability awareness.

In recognition of their exceptional commitment to sustainability, innovation, and STEM education, this prestigious distinction celebrates the school’s extraordinary achievements in environmental leadership.

Over the past two years, AYG has worked in close collaboration with Hillary Primary to embed the three pillars of sustainability —economic, social, and environmental—into its curriculum and culture. This partnership has equipped students with essential knowledge, hands-on experience, and a genuine passion for building a sustainable future.

Integrating Literacy, Numeracy, and Sustainability

Through its bespoke educational programme, AYG has offered a rich, interdisciplinary curriculum that blends literacy and numeracy with STEM and sustainability concepts. At Hillary Primary, this has manifested in:

STEM Days featuring immersive workshops—such as the launch of student-led “renewable energy companies” that built working wind turbines to power bulbs, demonstrating real-world application of classroom learning.
Sustainable Corner activities, where pupils engage with interactive energy-conservation advice in a fun, hands‑on environment.
Game Changer Podcasts , produced by students, showcasing their thoughtful responses to sustainable energy challenges—testaments to their enthusiasm and depth of understanding.

Student Empowerment & Community Engagement

Hillary Primary’s pupils consistently demonstrate outstanding engagement , creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit. Teams such as “Build It, Be It” and “Build a Better Planet” not only embrace imaginative project names but also assume key industry roles—acting as Safety Officers, Quantity Surveyors, and more—during practical builds. The result: every participant gains confidence, knowledge, and a taste for real‐world impact.

This in‑school journey extends outward: AYG and Walsall Council report substantial community outreach, including workshops for 128 local households, installation of energy‑saving measures (e.g. solar PV, insulation), and savings totalling £78,500 in annual energy costs. Hillary Primary has truly become a community-led catalyst for change .

project innovation of the year - community retrofit

We are proud to announce that Achieve Your Goals have recently been announced as ‘Project Innovation of the year - Community Retrofit' winners at the Unlock Net Zero Awards 2025.

We have worked with Walsall Council and Hillary Primary School on an innovative approach that uses the school as a catalyst for engaging with parents and carers in order to identify hard-to-treat properties in the area.

Walsall is the 25th-most-deprived local authority area; 81% of Hillary’s pupils are in the lowest decile band of deprivation and 76% do not speak English as a first language. Internet use and adult literacy levels in the area are low, making face-to-face and in-home support key. Working with community interest company Achieve Your Goals, the council delivers bespoke energy and renewable energy education packages to children within the school, with the intention that they will share this information at home, piquing their parents’ interest and opening up a channel of communication.

Word had also been spread via social media and through community institutions. Using this approach, the project has been able to identify grant-eligible homes that may otherwise have flown under the radar. To date it has facilitated £1.5m of grant-funded retrofits, generating £78,500 in energy savings.

Green careers event at delves infant school

On Tuesday, 18th June, Delves Infant School welcomed the Achieve Your Goals team for a vibrant and interactive Green Careers Event, giving Year 1 pupils an early insight into exciting and essential environmental careers. This engaging session introduced pupils to a variety of green jobs through both an informative presentation and hands-on learning activities.

Event Highlights

�� Presentation: Discovering Green Careers

The event kicked off with a lively and accessible presentation led by the Achieve Your Goals team. Pupils demonstrated excellent listening skills as they learned about a wide range of environmental roles—from scientists and conservationists to foresters and ecologists. The session aimed to spark curiosity and encourage pupils to think about how they can help protect the planet in the future.

�� Activity 1: Being a Forester

In this station, pupils stepped into the shoes of a forester. Using tape measures, they measured the circumference and diameter of various tree branches. They then counted the rings to estimate the trees' ages. This activity encouraged mathematical thinking and introduced pupils to the important role trees play in ecosystems .

�� Activity 2: Being a Hydrologist

Wearing lab coats and safety goggles, pupils explored the work of hydrologists. Using pipettes, they collected water samples and tested pH le vels using universal indicator paper. This hands-on experiment helped pupils understand the importance of clean water and how scientists monitor water quality.

�� Activity 3: Being an Ecologist

Pupils used handheld lenses to examine water samples for signs of life. They learned how ecologists observe and study ecosystems, looking at how even the smallest organisms contribute to biodiversity and environmental health.

For pupils who completed tasks early or preferred a quieter space, the Holding Station offered fun and educational alternatives. Activities included:

These options reinforced learning through play and provided a calming space for pupils to reflect and reset.

Impact and Feedback

The Green Careers Event was a great success, igniting interest in environmental roles and promoting curiosity about the natural world. Pupils showed enthusiasm and creativity throughout, with many expressing excitement about becoming “tree experts” or “water scientists” when they grow up.

Teachers praised the balance of educational content and practical engagement, noting the event's value in supporting science, maths, and PSHE learning objectives in a real-world context.

Sustainable Corner Fun at Abbey Primary School

On Wednesday 18th June, Year 5 pupils at Abbey Primary School took part in an exciting and educational event—The Sustainable Corner, designed to combine active play with meaningful learning. The session offered pupils a valuable opportunity to burn off some energy while also exploring important topics such as climate change, energy efficiency, and fuel poverty, all within a safe and supportive space.

Hosted by the Achieve Your Goals team with help from Walsall Council employees, the event focused on making big ideas accessible through interactive, team-based activities. Pupils engaged in games that introduced them to key vocabulary and global themes, including the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Event Highlights

The day was packed with high-energy, thought-provoking fun. Stations included:

Twister

This classic game was given a green twist, challenging pupils to match colours with sustainability topics, testing their memory and balance while reinforcing key terminology around environmental issues.

Giant Snakes and Ladders

A life-sized version of this childhood favourite taught pupils about climate-friendly choices (ladders) and unsustainable behaviours (snakes). Climbing and sliding became a playful metaphor for progress and setbacks in the journey toward a greener planet.

Play Your Cards Right

This quiz-style game was a huge hit, with pupils shouting “higher!” and “lower!” with great enthusiasm as they guessed how many kilowatt hours (kWh) could be saved by different energy-saving actions. From turning off lights to reducing shower times, pupils learned about real-world energy savings in a fun and memorable way—all while practicing comparison skills and building awareness of household energy use.

Colouring Station & Top Trumps

For pupils who needed some quiet time or finished activities early, the Colouring Station offered themed sheets focused on sustainability. Meanwhile, the Eco Top Trumps game helped pupils learn about green technologies, renewable energy, and sustainable habits through friendly competition.

Purpose aNd Impact

The Sustainable Corner is more than just a play area—it’s a space designed to educate and empower. By engaging children in accessible, age-appropriate ways, the event sparked conversation and curiosity around how young people can be part of creating a more sustainable future.

While having fun, pupils explored:

What fuel poverty means and how it affects families
How energy-efficient habits can help both the planet and people
The global goals for sustainable development—and how they relate to everyday life

Importantly, the event also encouraged pupils to take their new knowledge home. With tips on energy-saving habits and climate-friendly actions, they were empowered to share advice with their families and spark change at home.

Feedback & Reflections

The event was a resounding success, with pupils fully engaged and excited throughout. Teachers noted how well the activities combined learning with movement and creativity—idea l for Year 5 learners.

Swinton Queen Primary School Podcast

In another excellent recording of our Game Changer Podcast, we spoke with the brilliant Year 5 students from Swinton Queen Primary School: Cody, Riley, Henry, Finlay, Lily, Jed and Grayson. The students shared their knowledge on all things STEM and sustainability, as well as their thoughts on windows with Bulletproof glass!

“It's getting warmer which means Ice caps are melting and making the sea levels rise, and pretty much soon enough Antarctica will be gone, and the whole land will be covered in water”

This is true. As global temperatures rise due to climate change, ice caps and glaciers, especially in places like Antarctica and Greenland, are melting at faster rates. This adds more water to the oceans, causing sea levels to rise. If this continues over time, many low-lying coastal areas could become flooded or submerged.

“No, it's (climate) not the same as weather cause technically climate is the weather over like years or decades, like for example there could be climate in Africa 40 degrees over 30 years or something like that”

Correct! Weather is what we experience day to day—like rain, sunshine, or wind. Climate, on the other hand, is the average pattern of weather over a long period of time, usually 30 years or more. So, saying Africa might have a hot climate (like 40°C regularly over many years) is a great example.

“It’s (climate) changing due to pollution and sea levels rising”

Yes, pollution—especially from burning fossil fuels—releases greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. These gases trap heat, which causes global warming. This warming leads to climate change and contributes to rising sea levels due to melting ice and expanding seawater.

“Is there lack of water, water is disappearing due to evaporation”

In hot or dry areas, water can evaporate quickly due to high temperatures, reducing the amount of available surface water like lakes or rivers. This can lead to droughts and water shortages, especially when rainfall is also low. Climate change is increasing these kinds of extreme weather conditions.

“We’re polluting the air with like factories and stuff”

Absolutely right. Many factories release pollutants like carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and other harmful gases into the air. These not only contribute to climate change but can also cause air pollution, which is bad for people’s health and the environment.

We hope they continue to spread their knowledge and inspiring advice, as well as using their fancy hot water bottles and travelling to school by horseback. The future of the planet is looking bright with these young voices leading the way.

Podcast Recording – Abbey Primary School

It was a pleasure to sit down with the brilliant Year 5 climate game changers from Abbey Primary School: Layla, Payton, Teddy, Lacey and Rogan.
In our podcast recording, the group shared their thoughts on all things ‘Green’ and gave us a refreshing insight into their views on sustainability. I even learned something new myself—apparently, fridges have eco-modes!
Here are a few highlights from the podcast, along with a look at the science behind their ideas:

“Climate and weather aren’t the same cos climate doesn't change, after years of research by scientists they put climates to different places and that's what it's like most of the time.”

The students are right to point out the difference. Weather refers to short-term atmospheric conditions like rain or sunshine, while climate describes the long-term average of these conditions in a region—typically observed over 30 years or more.

“Back when they started using more fossil fuels, in the Industrial Revolution, they didn’t really have the knowledge to make the solar panels and wind turbines.”

Exactly! During the Industrial Revolution, coal became a key energy source. Its ability to generate heat led to major developments like the steam engine. At that time, renewable technologies like solar panels and wind turbines didn’t exist, and fossil fuels powered the world’s growth.

“If it's not windy, the wind turbines won’t work.”

That’s true—wind turbines need wind to spin their blades and generate electricity. Without wind, no energy is produced. However, the internal systems of the turbines, such as sensors and controls, stay active to monitor conditions and ensure the turbine is ready when the wind returns.

“In the trees there's oxygen, it produces oxygen, cut too many down and they’ll be less oxygen around for humans.”
“There's more deforestation than there was in like, ages.”

Trees play a vital role in producing oxygen through photosynthesis. They also absorb carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas. Unfortunately, deforestation has increased significantly in recent decades, putting many ecosystems and the planet’s health at risk.

APSE Energy Award Winners 2025

We are proud to announce that Achieve Your Goals have recently been announced as ‘Supporting Innovation’ winners at the APSE Energy Awards 2025.

We have worked with Walsall Council, to act as a ‘catalyst’ in the process of reaching out to parents/carers (householders) within the area. Via engagement with local school children, we have reached hard-to-reach households and found hard-to-treat homes. Delivering a bespoke sustainable energy education package to 200 children leading to £1.5m of grant-funded retrofits, with £78,500 of energy savings for parents and carers of pupils at Hillary Primary School.

Achieve Your Goals CIC have been working in partnership with Walsall council to deliver an innovative project in Walsall, principally in the catchment area of Hillary Primary School.

A package of learning about sustainability and energy efficiency has been created that incorporates literacy and numeracy, to allow pupils to fully understand the road to net zero. The programme allows children to learn about actionable climate changes.

During the programme, we carried out a targeted engagement project with the children’s parents which has enabled them to access the following support and advice:

The programme has a four-step approach process to enable delivery of a full turnkey approach to reducing fuel poverty and reducing the impact of carbon emissions.

Step 1:

Prepare – Installation of monitoring equipment at the school to explore the energy consumption of the building. This helps the children start to understand kWh and how much energy is used per square metre.

Step 2:

Explore - Innovative, bespoke learning packages to provide a full understanding of sustainability and prepare pupils to leave a legacy.

Step 3:

Community - Engagement with the wider community to give cost saving tips and advice on energy efficiency, while assessing the residents’ suitability for funding to install energy efficiency measures.

Step 4:

Deliver - Schools can make informed decisions and take steps to reduce their environmental impact. They can also look at how new technologies can be implemented.

Approach

Through the programme and with support from a number of funding streams, Walsall Council offered energy efficiency measures to 128 residents within the catchment area of the school. These measures comprised of 60 External Wall Insulation, 9 Loft Insulation, and 59 Solar PV systems installed. Prince Street in Walsall received extensive External Wall Insulation to a several properties. Due to planning restrictions on the street, houses were required to have brick slip feature to the front elevation of the properties.

Outcomes

The total value of works completed in the WS2 postcode area was in the region of £1.5 million and the average property received £12,500 of funding with total annual energy savings of £78,500. The properties completed within the WS2 area have had an average EPC increase from band E (pre EPC) to band C (post EPC)

STEM Day Sparks Bright Ideas at Hillary Primary School

Achieve Your Goals (AYG) had an inspiring afternoon with Year 3 pupils at Hillary Primary School, and were blown away by the students' imagination, teamwork, and passion for sustainable energy!

As part of the AYG educational programme, the pupils have been diving into the world of sustainable and affordable energy in class. Their efforts were rewarded with a dynamic, hands-on STEM workshop that brought their learning to life.

During the session, students launched their very own renewable energy construction companies. With imaginative names like “Build it, Be it” and “Build a Better Planet”, they showcased creativity, collaboration, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Each team explored key roles in the green energy industry—from safety-conscious Health and Safety Officers spotting construction site hazards, to sharp-minded Quantity Surveyors crunching the numbers. The highlight? Building a working wind turbine that successfully powered a light bulb!

The AYG team, joined by representatives from Walsall Council, were thrilled to see such talent and drive in action. It’s safe to say the future of green energy looks bright with these budding engineers and innovators leading the way.
